How Coaching helped Clara develop her Art!

How Coaching helped Clara develop her Art!

When my client Clara first called me up from New York last August, she described how she wanted to find a way to take up her art again [a passion that she's had since childhood]. But struggling to juggle her job, look after her baby and manage her home were taking up every second of her time and she couldn't see any way she could find a moment to set up her easel, let alone gain inspiration!

I worked with Clara on clearing out her tolerations [the things that were draining her energy], setting priorities and managing her time well to create some space in her life. We then starting looking at the first steps Clara could take towards fulfilling her dream. Clara chose to start classes at the Art Students League - it took a lot of organisation and the journey from Brooklyn to Manhattan was a long hour each way - but from that first daunting day Clara was totally inspired! Read on to find out more about how Coaching helped Clara to reach the point where she had her work shown in a recent exhibition...

Q/ What originally attracted you to Coaching, Clara?

A/ I needed help with creative pursuits and my career, and wanted them to somehow come together.

Q/ Did you have specific goals in mind? Or was it a general feeling that life could
be better?

A/ I had attempted to start working on my art again for several years, and was unable to find the time or a class that was a good fit. I also want to eventually sell my work, or at least get it out into the public and avoid taking endless art classes and never making that jump. I was also feeling stale with my career and needed some kind of change, but not sure what.

Q/ Was Coaching what you expected?

A/ Yes and No. I was able to make a good deal of progress towards these goals, but in trying to balance a family, career, and coaching, I found it challenging to find time to complete some of the assignments we agreed on. Ann was very patient with me and never made me feel bad those months when I only accomplished a couple of little goals. She always kept me focused on the progress I had made.

Q/ And how have your coaching sessions helped you to move forward?

A/ Ann never allowed me to put things off too far in the future. She always encouraged me to pursue my dreams in the present. I think it’s a totally different way of looking at life. Also, after a few sessions, I began to anticipate what she would ask me next, so I think it helped me to take control of my life, and identify and avoid excuses!

Q/ Have friends & family noticed any differences in you since you started have
Coaching sessions?

A/ I think my family has noticed I’m happier, more relaxed, and less stressed as well as more focused on things that give me energy and joy, which in turn is good for them!

Q/ And how’s your self esteem? How do you feel about yourself in comparison to six months ago?

A/ A HUGE difference! I feel much more competent in work life and in creative pursuits. I’ve taken on challenges at work that I had avoided in the past. I’m feeling much more in control of my career. I feel I’m also focusing on relationships with people who are positive and nurturing, and avoiding those relationships that drain my energy.

Q/ You’re based in New York. How has it been having a UK Coach? You can be as honest as you like here!

A/ It was totally fine. I don’t think there were any drawbacks, except maybe making that extra step to pick up an international phone card! I was able to network in the city on my own, once I had the confidence and enthusiasm to do it.

Q/What would you say to anyone currently considering coaching?

A/Do it!! Don’t wait!!! It’s a very wise investment.

Clara has just had her work exhibited at the Art Students League in Manhattan. I am incredibly proud of Clara. She has overcome many fears and obstacles to pursue her dream. She is a real example of how everyone CAN create time and space in a busy life to reach their goals. Its just taking that very first step....
